Job description

*As an instrument technician, you would have to install new machinery and equipment, maintain and monitor them and make sure they are in working order. For this, daily inspection has to be done to make sure there are no glitches.

*Off-shore jobs are very challenging and so remuneration is very good. Everyone on the rig – from the roustabouts to the technicians and supervisors – follows the same routine of 12-hour shifts, 7 to 14 days in a stretch and the same number of days off. On an average, instrument technicians get about $61,000 a year but this amount can differ from company to company. Job location and your experience level will also be factors.

*While working on an off-shore oil rig, you will have to brave extreme weather and face the potential dangers of hurricanes and storms, and the fact that accidents, sometimes fatal ones, are more than a possibility. Qualifications

*Instrument technicians must have a high school diploma and a degree in instrumentation or process technology, or an equivalent certificate/diploma from a recognized organization. If you don’t have the relevant qualifications, it would be a good idea to attend a two-year instrumentation technical course before applying. You will need to be a team player as most instrument technicians work in groups. You also must be able to troubleshoot and breakdown a problem logically so that you can solve it.

At the end of the day, living on a rig can wear you down mentally and physically but if you feel you can handle the harsh environment, then go for it. Chinese Instruments Market Situation

China has 3,232 instrument manufacturers, with a gross industrial output value of 96.8 billion yuan, sales revenue of 92.5 billion yuan; including environmental protection instruments, industrial output value and sales revenue are over 101 billion yuan respectively. There are 620 industrial automated instrumentation and control system enterprises in China, with an industrial output value of 28.5 billion and sales revenue of 28.2 billion yuan; The number of Scientific instruments enterprises is about 525, with an industrial output value of 26.3 billion, sales revenue of 25.1 billion yuan, sharing about 25% of the industry total. The number of Electrical and electronic measuring instruments enterprises is about 285, with an industrial output value of 14.8 billion, sales revenue of 14.7 billion yuan respectively and account for 13%, 14% and 14.6% of the whole industry. The number of information technology electrical equipment enterprises is about 200, with an industry output value of 13 billion, sales revenue of 13.2 billion yuan, sharing about 18% of the industry total. Other types of instruments and meters enterprises’ industrial output and sales revenue are less than 16%.

Chinese instruments will develop along the following trends:

First,electrical instruments and meters, with focus on the development of long-lived energy meter, electronic watt-hour meters, special instruments and electric network management system. In 2007, medium lower grade electric instruments and meters in the domestic market share reached 95%; by 2010, medium top grade electric instruments and meters in the domestic market is expected to account for 80%.

Second, industrial automated instruments will focus on the development of control system equipments, intelligent devices meters, and special automated instruments; there will be a trend towards full, expanded services and the promotion of automated instrument from simulation technology transform to digital technology, that within 5 years, the proportion of digital instruments will reach more than 60%; expansion in the ownership of copyright products to promote commercialization of automated software.

Third, scientific testing instruments will focus on the development of analytical instruments, environmental monitoring instrumentation, industrial furnace, as well as energy-saving equipment, geodetic instruments, measurement of global positioning system, laboratory equipment and other new products. Products with high technical content of the mid-range products accounted for 55% to 65% of the output value in 2007.

Fourth, environmental protection instruments and meters set a priority to the development of environmental monitoring instruments used in the atmospheric environment, water environment, also in sampling systems and automated control system for environmental monitoring products.
